This is a question that we have all been asked as a child. We dream of being an astronaut or a doctor or playing in the major leagues. But, what are your dreams if you have no food? Hungry bellies have no dream!
Consider this that 842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. Of these, one out of six children — roughly 100 million — in developing countries are malnourished. This environment of poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of all deaths in children under the age of five – or 3.1 million children each year.
In 1987 Richard Proudfit, a Minnesota businessman, traveled to Honduras. The neglect of the children he encountered changed his life forever. He founded Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) (www.fmsc.org) after reflecting on the fact that God said “if you have seen my starving children, feed them.” With the help of friends within the food industry, Mr. Proudfit, created the “MannaPack”, a fortified rice, soy and vitamin casserole.
The packets provide 6 meals, each containing the recommend daily nutritional requirements. But 1 bag is not a solution to the worldwide epidemic of hunger. FMSC provides service experience to 1000 volunteers annually in which MannaPacks are systematically prepared and packed. In 2013, more than 700,000 people volunteered their time to prepare almost 200,000,000 meals.
Invited by a customer, Cornerstone participated in one of the latest service experience at a location in Chicago. With 80 to 100 other volunteers, we packed more than 2,080 MannaPacks in over 130 boxes that would feed more than 70 children for the next year.
But, the most important successes are the children – like Pierre (Click the picture on the left to view a larger version of his before and after pictures), who at 1 was found uncared for, malnourished at only 12 pound and near death. After providing regular meals from FMSC, he is now more than 32lbs and 4 as of last November.
James 1:27 tells us the “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans…in their distress.” Without the work of FMSC, millions of more children would go hungry every year. FMSC helps those children to be able to dream about what they want to be when they grow up…because they now know that they will.
